Yesterday our iMac crashed for no apparent reason. It attempted to reboot
automatically but failed with a sign that looks like a circle with a diagonal
bar crossing it.

I managed to reboot and login, and launch a TM backup on an external HD, and I
went to sleep while the backup was running.

I woke up this morning and the machine was down again.

Eventually, I booted from a USB key and checked the HD, not diagnosed problem.

But when I try to book, I get to the place where a grey screen displays the
various accounts but if I try to login, I get a black on grey bar that
eventually stops progressing.

I tried with all the accounts I knew and got the same result.

The HD is encrypted (Filevault) and not anymore covered by Applecare. And I
can't remember the encryption password (may be written in a secure note, *on*
the disk...)

I hooked up the external HD to this MBP and could find a backup for last night
but I'm not sure it is complete or not corrupted.

What should be the next steps ?
