Recovery Partitions don't just come on factory machines — the Lion (I think) 
upgrade, added (or attempted to add) a recovery partition to existing Macs, and 
would complain if it couldn't.  (There were a couple fixes one could try, like 
slightly reducing the size of the boot partition and trying again.)  From what 
I understand, the retrofit worked on almost all Macs that hadn't previously 
been subjected to "clever" modifications (like splitting off a partition, etc.)
