I haven't used TimeMachine in a while, but this previously worked just fine. I had a sparse bundle image on an AFP share. Every hour TM would invisibly mount the share, then mount the image, perform the backup, and finally unmount the image and share. Do you have any error messages in Console.app from backupd?
