I just did a remote on the machine of one of my clients who also had exactly 
this problem. (She didn't know it, as she doesn't use Spotlight — I tried to 
use it to launch an app and got the immediate crash again.)  I fixed it for her 
immediately with this trick. Apparently, this defect is out there and pretty 
popular.
