One addition to the advice from Macs R We: in my experience, fonts can
cause the problems you describe. Look to see what fonts are in
~/Library. Sometimes there are "duplicates" of Apple system fonts or
fonts provided by applications. Apple's font management can check for
duplicates and sometimes flag bad fonts, but in my experience it sometimes
misses problem fonts. You could start by removing no-longer needed or
duplicate fonts. Also note that there are many new high-quality OpenType
fonts that are replacing older fonts, so be prepared to look for a
replacement if one of your "signature" fonts turns out to be the problem.

Take note of the advice to create the new user with the same uid and
gid.
