OK, here's a puzzling one.

One of my clients (hardly a power user) complained to me recently that a mail
notification shows up, then she goes to her mailbox, and it just isn't there.
It didn't take me long to discover that her confusion was arising from A) her
keeping mail in her inbox all the way back to 2008, and B) her mailbox display
being sorted by sender name instead of date received. So I changed her mailbox
sort — simple fix.

Then she asked me to create a couple mailboxes to store mail of different
types. Some were physical mailboxes on iCloud (she wanted to move that mail by
hand and have it available on all her devices), some were smart mailboxes on
that Mac (she wanted to locate all mail from a certain person). In the process
of creating all these mailboxes, I discovered that every single one of them
defaulted to sorting by sender name!

Now, I've never seen this before. I've created hundreds of mailboxes for myself
and others, and in all cases they started out sorted by date received. It never
even occurred to me that Mail would default to any other way. Yet this was 100%
consistent.

So my first thought was, there must be some Preference set wonky. Yet I
couldn't find a preference in Mail that had anythig to do with the default
sorting of mailboxes.

Anybody know where this skeleton is hidden?
