thank you sherm and dan for your helpful suggestions. overall i feel a bit let down by apple's integration of perl. i guess i was expecting too much; while the perl supplied works as advertised, i have always regarded perl as a 'living' piece of software which i like to keep upgraded. i have also felt that it's my duty to run the latest version so that perhaps i will find a bug or other problem that no one else has. that is also why i run parrot, incidentally; even if i really only run make test (for now). it would be nice if a version of perl had a single icon which can be dragged to the trash to uninstall, and another icon which is dragged 'somewhere' to install a new version, much as you can drag applications to the dock and the applications folder. i guess i have been spoiled by the good stuff is os x though. :) to conclude, i think it would be prudent for me to downgrade to 5.6.1 for now and then recompile CB. i was hoping to play with the new threads in 5.8.0 on the next rainy day available to me but CB is more important right now. thanks again for your help. BTW, sure enough, the source is in /Developer/Source/CamelBones. kind regards, -vincent
