The information in the above is good, as far as the arguments to use when running 'perl Makefile.PL' goes. But, when it speaks of editing the generated Makefile, it is incorrect. Editing the generated Makefile is a band-aid over the symptoms, not a real solution to the problem.
The correct solution was posted here by Ed Moy (Apple's Perl guy), and is in the list archives here:
