That's not what happens with Sherm's installer. It's all quite well contained and behaves very nicely. As I said before, Sherm has done awesome work on this.
I certainly understand the desire to poke around under the hood though. It's just that ImageMagick is all the things you describe and compiling from source can be an exercise in futility for all but the most deliberate. I never came close.... But after reading up on ImageMagick I just wasn't compelled to continue either. Now I have it (thanks to Sherm) but still prefer using GD to create dynamic graphic output.
