The problem seems vaguely familiar. I used to get it when MacPerl was
installed only on a network drive, and the OSdoesn't go looking for
programs on those disks. In short: the OS doesn't find MacPerl, the
program. I assume it's on a local drive...

Rebuilding the desktop was a good idea, but apparently not good enough.
The association between MacPerl's ID and the program itself is still
missing. You haven't messed with MacPerl's creator type, have you?
