   If you're just starting on data persistence I suggest the "Data 
Persistence" chapter in the "Advanced Perl Programming" by O'Reilly. 
It has sections on DataDumper, Freeze/Thaw, Storabe, DB Ties, etc. 
It is a good intro and covers the main bases except for Data::DumpXML 
which is a great module.

   Don't use the readmes that come with the modules, but instead drop 
the PM's on shuck.  That's where the real documentation is.
