To further produce confusion, more stuff is supported in back ticks if
Toolserver (the MPW thing) is present for the use of the free-standing
MacPerl, and when using the MPW Tool form of MacPerl. If MPW can do
something, it's supported in back ticks in those cases.
This is yet another way to produce a script which works on one Mac but not
another.

It's inherent in the FTP protocol's "ASCII" (text, "A") transmission
method...any FTP client working with any FTP server should, in that mode,
move files from the native line ending of the source to the native line
ending of the sink. On the wire, the line endings are in a known form
independent of source and sink. It's not a special talent of Mac clients.
