I wouldn't have thought it but I just finished a project resuscitating a 68k Quadra
700 with Mac OS 8.1, MacPerl 5.2.0r4, and Mac::Serial v1.008.

My need centers on a project requiring a networked dedicated computer to continuously
slurp serial data from a scientific instrument, package that data into hourly data
files, and make those data files available using http: GET requests. Naturally, I
wanted to keep cash expenditures to a minimum.

Mac OS 8.1 was used because it supports 68k hardware and provides native http: server
support. The Quadra 700 was used because it was around, provided ethernet support and
is quiet. Mac::Serial was used to access the serial port through MacPerl. MacPerl was
used because "it helps me get my job done". :)

Many, many thanks and a tip o' the hat to all who have made Perl and MacPerl available
for the rest of us.

BTW, Mac::Serial v1.007 is the latest version currently available on CPAN. v1.008 is
undergoing test (see above) and will be released shortly.

Based on this (positive) experience I would add a vote for (clean-up and bug fix, not
new features) support of 68k MacPerl.

Best regards,
Joseph
