This has been discussed at length both here and on the
Mac OS X perl list.

MacPerl is not carbonized. Mac OS X includes Perl 5.6.0
by default and can be used from the command line the same
as perl on any other unix system (and reports are that 5.7.2
compiles easily with the Developer tools). Integration with
tools like BBEdit work essentially the same as they do on the
Classic OS.

What may prove useful at some point is carbonized versions
of the modules in the Mac:: namespace that currently
access the Classic toolbox.

Here's Chris' blurb on that from http://macperl.sf.net/

  Mac OS X

MacPerl runs under the Classic environment on Mac OS X.
There are currently no plans to port it to Carbon. Unix
perl runs just fine under Mac OS X. It would be nice to,
at some point, have the Toolbox modules (Mac::Windows,
Mac::Events) Carbonized so the same GUI-based MacPerl
programs would run on both platforms. This may happen
in the future. There is a separate mailing list for perl
  on Mac OS X.
