Nod, nod. In Finder, open the info box "about this computer", which
shows not only how many memory each program has been assigned to, but
also, how much of it, it actually uses. I think you'll see a steady
increase of that percentage for MacPerl, and a (close to) 100% usage
when the script stops working.
