Ok, I confirmed that the problem does occur outside of MacPorts; it's
a PHP bug. I also see that a bug report has already been filed:
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=39354
It's fixed in PHP's CVS and will presumably be in PHP 5.2.1. I'll see
if I can find the specific change that was made and include it in the
portfile....
