I'm all for it. I'm just curious what happens to users who have already installed ports that write into /Applications/DarwinPorts. Do those apps will just stay there until the next time they're upgraded, at which point they would get upgraded into /Applications/ MacPorts?

Only upgrades or new installations would notice the change. Existing installations would be unaffected until such time as an upgrade happens.
