configure.args --mandir=${prefix}/share/man
When I do that, the mtree violation disappears, but also all of
the above files do not get installed. They don't get installed in $
{prefix}/share/man; they don't get installed anywhere. Why?
My guess is that ghostscript's handwritten Makefiles don't deal
with mandir properly. I'll have a look at it more closely and see
what we can do about it.
