I don't recall the warnings, but I did get this particular failure
when building perl5.8 with the shared variant (which only does
"configure.args-append -Duseshrplib" in the Portfile). I never looked
into the problem though, as perl5.8 built just fine without that variant
(even including +threads).

Ahh thanks, that's good to know. However, Apple's 5.8.8 seems to have both
defined:
$ /usr/bin/perl -V|grep config_args
config_args='-ds -e -Dprefix=/usr -Dccflags=-g -pipe
-Dldflags=-Dman3ext=3pm -Duseithreads -Duseshrplib'
So there must be some patch that gets this working. Is there a URL where Apple
keeps its source code of open source packages? We could merge all their patches
into our 5.8.8.
