Sure - a lot of folks refer to other ports collections as a good
way of getting a rough idea of what the dependencies are, where to
fetch the bits, etc. You could certainly do a lot worse.
I don't know a thing about FreeBSD ports, so my suggestion would be
to start by reading the guide:
http://guide.macports.org/
And look at the source of the existing portfiles, to see how things
are done. There are thousands to choose from.
