Okay, the vim tuff might need to go back there, but generally an
Emacs Local Variables section at the end of the file is way easier
to read and understand than collapsing everything into the first
line...
Because that's what was decided on some time ago and that's what it
says in the Guide:

If you want to change that guideline, go ahead and bring it up for
discussion.
"lint" in 1.6.0 is complaining about this, but this complaint has
already been removed from MacPorts trunk.
