Doh! I even wondered about that a bit, but didn't look as close as I ought to have at that if statement.

I can't at the moment remember what the arguments against this separation were. It would take more disk space temporarily to store e.g. the decompressed tar archive while its contents are extracted, but that shouldn't be a big deal. Any other reasons we wouldn't want this?

One more piece of clutter to clean up, but I suppose you've got plenty of that already inherently in the process, what's one more...
