MacPorts trunk seems to like picking distfiles.macports.org to

I just did a quick test and I get much better results. Obviously, to my office is 5-10 MB/s which is expected since the servers are very close to me. But even downloading to my personal machine at home over a cable modem averaged around 1 MB/s. There's probably a point when you're too far away for pings to accurately model the bandwidth between, but I think you should be getting something better than 10KB/s anyway.

Maybe there's some ICMP filtering that's breaking PMTU discovery (which could be interfering with TCP window scaling):

[xeon:~] dluke% ping -s 1600 gandalf.geeklair.net
PING geeklair.net (129.250.34.2): 1600 data bytes
1608 bytes from 129.250.34.2: icmp_seq=0 ttl=51 time=90.470 ms
1608 bytes from 129.250.34.2: icmp_seq=1 ttl=51 time=74.231 ms
^C
--- gandalfgeeklair.net ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 74.231/82.350/90.470/8.119 ms

[xeon:~] dluke% ping -s 1600 distfiles.macports.org
PING alpha.macosforge.org (17.254.17.246): 1600 data bytes
^C
--- alpha.macosforge.org ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

I enabled all ICMP types. Does that help?
