Can you point me to a doc on how to use the universal vs. 386 variant.
I did not know it was added automatically. I will remove the variants.

Why have you added an empty i386 variant?

Why have you added a universal variant which looks very much like the
default universal variant that MacPorts automatically adds to all ports except that yours hardcodes parameters like the sdkroot and the list of architectures which MacPorts allows users to configure, and by hardcoding
the sdkroot to the 10.5 sdk, you make this port unable to be installed
universal on earlier versions of Mac OS X?
