Yes - almost. Only I did not install Xquartz. But I did install an
updated Xcode and the rest of event chain is 100% head on - so could
an Xcode update have a similar effect?

Well... Xquartz is the only released package that would install a
3.0.0 versioned /usr/X11/lib/libXdamage.1.dylib ... so just go
download Xquartz 2.3.2_rc3, and you'll be happier ;)
