It's a variant not a variants.

It's a recommendation not a recommendations.

I was going for consistency with the existing variable names we have in portfiles:

categories
platforms
master_sites
checksums
patchfiles
configure.args
depends_lib

These are already plural, and in each case, each one can have multiple values. A port can be in multiple categories, work on multiple platforms, be downloaded from multiple master_sites, etc., just as a port could offer multiple recommendations for supplemental ports, and conceivably also for alternative ports.
