In my opinion decompressing distfiles is not vital. When the
registry is
broken, it is hard to get it fixed agin. But if a decompressor (tar,
gzip, bzip2) is broken, it's easy to deactivate this port and use the
one from the system.
However, MacPorts does not issue an error message if the decompressor
fails. The first error message the user sees is during the configure
phase when it can't find the files that should be there. This is
confusing.
