James,
You'll want these packages to build against the gcc44 package
rather than the gcc43 package. Only gcc 4.4.x and later builds
on Snow Leopard.

Huh? Really? I seem to be building and using gcc-4.0 and 4.2 just
fine... what's failing about pre-4.4 gccs for you?

Jeremy,
I am referring to packages that need the gcc43 or gcc44 packages
in MacPorts to satisfy a requirement for gfortran. When I submitted
patches to FSF gcc to solve darwin10 build issues, I only did so
for the current gcc trunk (which became gcc 4.4.0). There was no
attempt made to backport the changes to gcc 4.3.x. This means any
package in MacPorts which needs gfortran will have to depend on
gcc44 or later if it is to be buildable on Snow Leopard.

Then perhaps your fix was not used, because gcc43 is currently installed on my Snow Leopard system. r57658 may have been the fix we used.

Last I checked gcc42 still wouldn't build, but perhaps r57804 fixed that. I will try again now.
