Not sure how to track this down in a reproducible manner.
A dim memory came to me in the meantime: fixing the disk permissions
via the Apple supplied Disk Utility "Repair Disk Permissions" got the
system that this occurred on working again.
Could you possibly try this, reporting if it had any effect?
