Indeed, a portgroup! There was some mention of that before, I seem to recall: 
using a portgroup for allowing the selection of a compiler. That's not a bad 
idea; it would simplify a number of portfiles. It would need to be flexible 
enough to at least let the port specify which compilers are allowed. For 
example, pdftk would need to be able to specify that only gcc42 and earlier can 
be used.

Unless you're saying it should be a math-and-science-ports-specific portgroup, 
in which case it could offer fewer (maybe even no) options.
