I'm not sure if it's just a Tiger thing or if it's a GCC 4.0 thing (which would 
affect Leopard too), but on Tiger this gives tons of:

i686-apple-darwin8-gcc-4.0.1: unrecognized option '-Xarch_i386'

It builds, and you said it's only an optimization, so I'm not sure if you 
want/need to address this, but I wanted to let you know this method of 
specifying optimization flags is not respected on all systems.
