gcc-4.2 is not available on Xcode 4.2 and later -- the same versions of Xcode which would default to clang -- so you cannot rely on it exclusively. Also, what of llvm-gcc-4.2? See: https://trac.macports.org/wiki/PortfileRecipes#compiler If llvm-gcc-4.2 works, use that (2nd block of code at that link).
