It looks as if there is a bug with binary ports, since although I installed
gnutar and changed my PATH according to Ryan's advice
(http://trac.macports.org/ticket/31772#comment:10) I couldn't get this sorted
out: for some reason a locally updated Portfile caused trouble when trying to
get the binary port from MacPorts' server.
