Wasn't this the way things were before? That is, ports were (more or less) okay 
with whatever version of Perl happened to be installed. It seems that we've 
moved away from that to the current system of being dependent on specific 
versions.

Why did that move happen? This was before my time on MacPorts, so I'm having a 
hard time finding any relevant mailing list threads.
