As of 2013-05-04 Debian stable uses GNOME 3.4 as its standard desktop
environment.
I would hope their move can be taken as an indication that 3.x versions of
all essential libraries are now available.
I think we could copy MacPorts' GNOME ports to a branch for upgrading to
3.x versions.
Freezing branch versions at 3.4 until the branch can be merged back into
trunk might simplify this process.

I would imagine some old, abandoned programs will not be compatible with
GNOME 3, but that hardly seems like a reason to keep new,
actively-developed programs stuck at old versions.
