trunk/base fails at compiler.cflags

r108298 is failing.  I'm seeing things like this with muniversal:

checking for gcc... /usr/bin/clang {-arch x86_64}
checking whether the C compiler works... no

Reverting back to trunk/base r107753 works:
checking for gcc... /usr/bin/clang -arch x86_64
checking whether the C compiler works... yes

I'm blaming larryv since... well... that's what svn log/blame tell me ;)
