I am not a MacPorts member, so my suggestion here is not authoritative. For anyone wanting to become familiar with port maintenance, I would not recommend attempting to work on a port which has been neglected for several years, as it likely has few (if any) active users. I suggest to instead focus on updating and fixing ports which haven’t been outdated or broken for very long, and which likely have far more active users who will benefit from your efforts.
