I think you can just restart your x server and have things work (and/ or remove your .Xauthority file)... but it's been a while since I've renamed a host...

If the hostname must be changed, then X (as in XFree86) must be re- installed as a MacPort?

This isn't a macports problem, and you shouldn't need to reinstall XFree86.
