Thanks for your response M. I'm not sure I completely understand your suggestion. Since octave and gcc40 aren't installed, I can't uninstall them. I did clean both of them, however, and upon trying to install octave, I get the same error that Anthony reported earlier. I also upgraded all outdated ports, uninstalled and cleaned gcc42, and cleaned octave, then tried installing octave, and it choked again with the same error message. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point, so any further advice would be greatly appreciated.
