the conftest stuff is not a file, the code is in configure. If you look around, in configure or config.log, you should find how the check for py-gnome is done.

Well, sort of. there's code in configure that creates a file, then runs it, capturing the output.

I'm including the maintainer of py-gnome on this, since that seems to be the latest sticking point.

checking Python bindings for gnome... ./configure: line 6025: 819 Bus error $PYTHON conftest.py
cat: conftest.out: No such file or directory

checking Python bindings for gconf... ^C./configure: line 6052: 824 Bus error $PYTHON conftest.py
cat: conftest.out: No such file or directory

checking Python bindings for gnome vfs... gnomevfs
checking Python bindings for glade... configure: error:

**** The python bindings for glade (pygtk2-libglade) could not be found.

There is a problem here too, py-gtk2 is supposed to provide the glade bindings too.
