Installing that package (as of about a month ago) gets one an ALPHA
version of emacs. Starting it up generates a warning about possible
data loss!
If one wants a recent, relatively stable version of emacs that acts
like a native Mac application the proper incantation is:
sudo port install emacs-devel +carbon
