The Apple-provided developer tools (which include gcc) are a
well-documented requirement to run MacPorts. And they are easy to
install; they come with the installer DVD for OS X or can be
downloaded for free from Apple's website. That's about as "easy for
the masses" as it can get.
Is there something in your setup that precludes you from installing
Apple's dev tools?

I'm new to OS X, so bare with me as I figure it all out.
Can you provide me the link to the dev tools ? We have the install
DVDs at work - I'm at home today. I didn't realize these were freely
available (hence my question).
