I don't know why that's happening. You may want to try reinstalling
MacPorts 1.5.0 from disk image:
http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/downloads/MacPorts-1.5.0/
If that works, then be sure to "sudo port selfupdate" to get up to
the current version, 1.5.2.
