Um, what Ryan and Jordan said. Not everyone who picks up on MacPorts is
going to know how to or care about search paths and libraries, and I don't
know of any other OS that supports two package management systems easily
(FreeBSD supports RPM in compatibility mode but I have found it to have
issues occasionally).

if you can manage the details, have at it. Most people use package managers
to avoid that kind of knuckle-bashing.
