what's the /usr/local stuff doing in here?
I downloaded apache2 stuff independently from MacPorts and chose to
install it at /usr/local.
[/usr/local]ls
BerkeleyDB.4.5/ info/
mysql-5.1.21-beta-osx10.4-i686/
PEAR-1.6.1/ lib/ php5/
bin/ lynx/ share/
httpd-2.2.6/ man/ src/
httpd-2.2.6.tar.gz mysql@
svn_installer_backup/
include/ mysql-5.1.18-beta-osx10.4-i686/

..whether I install Apache2 via MacPorts or solo, I end up with the
same problem with db44.
Installing things in /usr/local can be problematic for package
managers like MacPorts. We recommend you do not install anything in /
usr/local if you intend to use MacPorts. (Installing in /usr/local/
<anything> is probably fine though.)
