sorry for the post but I thought X11 would be kind of kicked on demand.

Unfortunately not. Almost all programs written for X11 are written with the expectation that X11 is the windowing system being used (by contrast with, say, Aqua on Mac OS X or the Windows GUI), and so don't know anything about other windowing systems. Some projects provide a wrapper to automatically launch X11 if it isn't already running so that the main program will then work, but the only one that I know of that does this is the binary release of OpenOffice.org. It might be possible to add some code to MacPorts to provide a wrapper script for all X11 software to make launching easier in this way, but I don't really know how to do that.
