Don't worry about it; I'm not thin skinned. Thanks for explaining about the gcc compiler; now I understand why /usr/local/ can be such a problem. However, I tried renaming /usr/local/ and removing the ports wxmaxima, maxima, and sbcl, and then reinstalling them. This leads to a compiler error. It looks like there is still some conflict in the libraries. I can try to track it down more precisely, but before I do, I will ask you whether what happened is something you recognize.
