Maybe a better way is
download source
uncompress to work dir
do ./configure and make
then do sudo port install libtiff

thus it'll be put into registry correctly.

I did this for some package  (forgot its name) in this way since
mysteriously it can not be installed by "port install" directly.

I can't recommend that procedure. Ports should install correctly using "port install". If they do not, please file bugs in Trac so someone can resolve the problem.
