I don't understand either, but this came up in the error log, and is
what gave me the clue that I needed emacs:
----------------------
if test "emacs" != no; then \
set x; \
list='start-po.el po-mode.el po-compat.el'; for p in $list; do \
if test -f "$p"; then d=; else d="./"; fi; \
set x "$@" "$d$p"; shift; \
done; \
shift; \
EMACS="emacs" /bin/sh ../../build-aux/elisp-comp "$@" || exit 1; \
else : ; fi
Fatal malloc_jumpstart() error
-----------------------
The Fatal malloc_jumpstart() error also happened if I gave the emacs
command at the shell.
Anyway the end result is that wireshark starts. I still have issues
and will put them in a separate post if not solved.

That's interesting, because gettext has no dependency on emacs,
according to MacPorts dependency system.

So all your problems at this point stem from gettext 0.17 not
installing. I'm the maintainer of gettext, but I've never seen this
error before. I can't imagine why the gettext work directory
wouldn't
exist. Please clean and try again.
sudo port clean --work gettext
sudo port install gettext
Let us know if you get the same (or different) errors then.

The problem was related to emacs. I found a patch to get emacs
installed
here:
http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/ticket/13294
After installing the patch and emacs, then the gettext installation
went
fine.
