That is what -f does. So you probably never want to use -f with port upgrade.

+darwin9 variant, other times not. I don't know if this is the cause

A +darwin_9 variant will appear for ports which want or need some special behavior on Leopard, and will be absent for those that do not. Nothing to worry about.
